Mobile ads 'annoy’ students

According to e-marketer, a survey of students at Ball State University found that only 1.2% are pleased when they receive a mobile ad and 17.6% of them are neutral.

iPhone changing consumer behaviour

In the EU5 markets (UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy) the iPhone only has 4% of the mobile market, but 18% of the overall EU5 smartphone market. However, iPhone users are the most consistent consumers of mobile media with 87% using applications and 85% using their phone to browse the internet.

Smartphones dominate Hong Kong

Smartphones are dominating the Hong Kong mobile market with a penetration rate of nearly 50%, according to the latest research from TNS. The number of smartphone users in Hong Kong is almost double the global rate of 23%.

Mobile music increases across Europe

Music consumption over mobile has increased to 23.8% of mobile users across five leading European mobile markets according to data from Comscore's MobiLens. The 54 million total mobile music users in the EU5 countries (UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain), represent a 10% increase in the past year.

Emirates introduces mobile bookings

The Middle Eastern carrier, Emirates is making it easier for prospective customers to book a flight with the introduction of a mobile booking site. Mobile Emirates.com is available to customers around the globe and is open for bookings 24 hours a day. The mobile offering is compatible with over 300 mobile devices but is currently only available in English.

US regulators clear Google's AdMob purchase

The US Federal Trade Commission has cleared Google's US$750m acquisition of AdMob, despite its initial misgivings that the move could lead to the creation of a dangerously dominant mobile advertising behemoth. It turns out that the deciding factor was Apple's decisive move into the market in January with its own purchase of mobile ad company Quattro Wireless - providing a crucial source of competition.

Researchers eMarketer expect that US-based spending on mobile ads will reach US$1.6 billion in 2013, well over double the US$593 million it believes will be spent in 2010.

Android shakes up US smartphone market

The Android operating system (OS) has moved past Apple to take second place behind RIM's OS in the US, according to market research company NPD. NPD's wireless market research reveals that, based on unit sales to consumers last quarter, the Android operating system is at a 28% penetration rate, while RIM's OS is ahead at 36% and Apple's OS is third at 21%.

Consumers comfortable with mobile payments

The rise of smartphones and App stores will see payments via mobile to quadruple in the next three years. Juniper Research's 'Mobile Payments Report' predicts the value of transactions for goods, money transfers and wireless communication technology (NFC) will reach $630bn by 2014.

Apple aims to charge a million for iAds

Apple is pushing the envelope with its plans for its new mobile-device advertising capability, saying that it aims to charge as much as US$1 million for ads, and as much as ten times that for advertisers who want to be in at the launch. The ads are expected to start appearing in iPhone and iPod Touch apps in June, and on iPads later on in the year.

Mobile ad market up by a third in 2009

A survey by the IAB and PWC has revealed that the mobile ad market grew by an impressive 32% in 2009 to £37.6m. There is plenty more scope for growth, though; at present, it only accounts for 1% of digital spend. Mobile search expenditure grew by 41% to £20.2m, meaning it constituted 54% of mobile spend (up from 50% in 2008).
